There are so many electronic toys these days that children come to expect every toy to "do" something. When we introduce children to toys and activities that help them imagine, create, and think, we actually teach them to rely on their own imagination. This may seem as a difficult task at first, as it requires more involvement from parents, but it actually translates into children who grow up knowing how to keep themselves busy without being bored. Babies and toddlers love to play so why not teach them through play? Why not introduce them to educational toys and games that they can benefit from AND have fun at the same time? Every child learns in their own way and what works for some kids may not work for others. I found that the items I listed below helped my children not only learn but also enjoy the process. Please keep in mind that many of the activities listed below require adult supervision (some may contain small parts). The jigsaw puzzles below may be worked on as early as 12 months. Guide your child to help them locate certain parts of the picture and soon enough they will be able to put the puzzle together on their own. Alphabet puzzles help familiarize them with letters and the objects they represent, while helping develop fine motor skills (grabbing pegs and placing them into slots). The First Year Milestone creeps up so fast that many parents find themselves rushing to find the perfect first birthday gift for the baby in their life. Some of you know that I am a strong believer in teaching my children through play. Teaching your toddler to read is not as complicated as many may think. Having done this with three kids, I can share some things that have helped us build a great foundation. Early reading offers a ton of great benefits for your child. With every book that they read, their vocabulary and knowledge base grow wider. It is truly rewarding to see what toddlers are capable of. No, you are not depriving them of their childhood, they enjoy this just as much as they enjoy everything else. I will walk you through the steps on how to introduce reading through play and will share the reading system that really works for young kids. Make sure to scroll to the end of this article for the link.

To build a great foundation for reading, introduce letters and sounds in all the things you do together. You can introduce them to reading in everything you do already. 

"Look and Find" board books are perfect for developing concentration and developing vocabulary. As you introduce new objects to look for, you are introducing your child to new words and sounds. You can make any book a "look and find" book when you ask them to find certain objects in it. There are so many things to find when you ask your child to find things beyond the objects listed on the side.

Alphabet puzzles, alphabet bingo, word builder puzzles are all great ways to introduce letters, sounds the letters make, objects that they are associated with, and help establish the learning foundation of building words.

Daily activities with your child such as painting, drawing with chalk outside, crafting, playing with play dough are all fun ways that you can use to introduce letters and sounds. Even when your child is too young to fully grasp the idea, they will eventually associate the letters with the sounds that each letter makes. You can read my earlier blog post about the benefits of early introduction of play dough here and how you can use it to introduce letters and learn new words.

On top of all this, using the system linked below helped my child read simple words before the age of 3 and I really think it is a wonderful system to introduce at an early age. It is a fun activity to do together! Through the introduction of fun characters that represent letters, stories and songs that go along with each letter, lots of step by step reading books, as well as a writing workbook, this system helps create a deeper understanding in the mind of a young child. It is simple enough that every parent can find the time for and yet packed with ton of great resources. They make it easy for the parents to introduce each letter and the steps to start blending sounds. Although I think that some stories (not all) may be at times a bit confusing to a toddler, I have altered some stories in a way that I know my child would understand best. Even with that said, I still strongly believe in this system as I can see with my own child that it really works. It makes it a wonderful birthday gift or a holiday gift and I wanted to share it with all the parents.

During the quarantine, when so many of us are stuck at home, I can't help but notice how many people are wondering how to keep their toddlers busy. One of the best activities you can introduce to your child is play-dough. It is so beneficial for babies, toddlers and children that it deserves a blog post of its own. So many people wait until kids are older to introduce play-dough but introducing it at an early age has numerous benefits. Check out the top five benefits of introducing play-dough to your child:

1. It is an excellent tool that aids in development of fine motor skills. Squeezing, shaping and cutting strengthens the hand muscles.

2. It helps develop creativity and imagination. Just think of all the things you can make with play-dough. You can create various objects, people, animals, play dough dolls, play dough barn, play dough bakery. The possibilities are endless!

3. It helps with language development. Creating different objects introduces your child to new words that will help them expand their vocabulary and social skills as you discuss things during play.

4. You can use play-dough to learn shapes, colors, numbers and alphabet. Don't know how to get your toddler to learn their ABCs ? Play-dough will surely get their attention. Just create the letters, numbers and shapes and while you are at it, introduce color names. 

5. Improves pre-writing skills as it helps develop the pincer grasp. Pinching, squeezing, rolling the play-dough between fingers to create balls, flattening, pulling, ripping helps develop the pincer grasp which is a crucial step in pre-writing skills.

I would recommend introducing play dough to your child around 12 months of age. Although the recommended age per Play-Doh website is 3 years old, with parent supervision you can start much earlier. Take this time to fully indulge in your child's development and have fun while you are at it. As long as you supervise, there is no risk involved with playing with play-dough but numerous benefits. 

I highly recommend the activity table by Play-Doh. It comes with everything needed to get you started with unlimited possibilities of play-dough creative play. When you are thinking about that first birthday gift or a holiday gift for your child, give them a gift of imagination.

Toddler Board Games

Board games are a great way to add some fun to your toddler's schedule. Not only are they a great way to spend time together, they also offer many other great benefits for their development. Board games are a great way to teach pre-school kids focus and patience. They help develop vocabulary, number and color recognition, counting, and fine motor skills. The first three years are the most crucial for brain development in children. That is why it is imperative that the time you spend with your baby provides the proper engagement and challenges. Babies are like sponges. They start listening and processing information in the womb. Once they are born, they start absorbing the information around them. Stimulating baby's senses helps them learn about this new, big, noisy world.

Here are some activities that you can do with your infant to facilitate their development:

Newborn - at this point, baby's vision is a bit blurry and therefore high contrast and bright toys help grab their interest. Singing and reading to your baby helps develop their sense of hearing and provide a strong foundation for language development.

1-3 months - Tummy time is an important activity with your baby. Babies may not like it at first but as you gradually increase the time spent on the tummy, their muscles get stronger and they start to enjoy this time more and more. We got it as a gift and its has been a favorite ever since. It changes color to stimulate visual tracking and has textured bumps to encourage sensory development. The perfect rattle to grab your baby's attention at tummy time and beyond.

4-6 months - If you have been consistent with your tummy time activities, your baby will be able to stay in this position longer. This is the perfect age when they start to reach for toys and are more animated. Talk to them, make them laugh, play peek-a-boo. It is a fun time for both parents and babies. You can still utilize the rattles mentioned above. Other fun toys to introduce at this stage are sensory balls. These balls have different colors, shapes and textures. You can have the baby roll the balls and explore the textures during tummy time as well as when they are sitting up.

 By 6 months, some babies are able to sit well unassisted so this is the perfect time to introduce books where they can touch and explore different textures as well as learn how to flip the pages.

Breastfeeding comes with so many challenges with one being the constant variation in the quantity of milk supply. If you breastfeed on demand, your baby should be able to regulate the supply as needed (cluster feeding for instance may promote more supply). Pumping more often or in addition to breastfeeding may help increase supply as well. Sometimes we want to make a little more than the baby needs so we can store it for later use.

A little natural boost can help increase the supply.

Here are some tips:

1. Drink Plenty of Water - this seems simple enough but we often forget to drink enough of water which helps maintain and increase our supply.

2. Mother's Milk Tea - is an herbal tea containing fenugreek, fennel, anise, coriander, blessed thistle that are known to increase breastmilk supply.

3. Garlic - is a very nutritious herb that is known to promote lactation. It is also a natural antibiotic that helps us stay healthy for our little ones. If your baby tolerates it in your milk well, it is a good way to increase your supply. If you feel that it makes them fussy then you may want to skip this one. It is believed, however, that babies that enjoy garlic in their mother's breastmilk latch and breastfeed better.

4. Fresh Ginger Root - another healthy option to not only keep you healthy but increase breastmilk production and help with the let down reflex.

5. Sesame Seeds - rich in calcium, sesame seeds are the best seeds that increase supply. 

6. Flax Seeds - like sesame seeds, flax seeds help with milk production and contain essential fatty acids.

7. Almonds - high in protein and essential fatty acids, almonds are a perfect and delicious way to increase milk supply and can be easily added to any diet. Did you know that almonds are also appetite suppressors?  Due to protein, unsaturated fat and fiber, almonds keep you feeling full longer making it a perfect addition to your post pregnancy diet.

8. Oats - abundant in nutrients is perfect for increasing milk production.

9. Lactation Cookies - a delicious way to increase your supply. Lactation cookies combine a few lactation promoting ingredients such as brewer's yeast, oats, flaxseeds and nuts. I felt an almost instant increase in my supply after trying Lactation Cookies.  

10. A Well Balanced Diet - overall following a well balanced diet help promote lactation. Try to incorporate some of the items above as well as dark leafy greens such kale and spinach that help with milk production.

Best 7 Stretch Mark Creams to Use During Pregnancy

Everyone knows that stretch marks during pregnancy are usually all due to genetics but moisturizing skin can surely help prevent or reduce their appearance. During my first two pregnancies, I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula (Lotion and Cream) to help prevent stretch marks. This time around, I decided to try out other products to see if there was anything better on the market. Here are my thoughts on the following 7 creams/oils that I tried during my last pregnancy:

1. Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Lotion (new formula) 

I enjoyed the light consistency of this lotion that was easy to apply, got absorbed quickly and was not greasy. Something to note is that the fragrance of the new formula changed. I preferred the original fragrance over this new one.

2. Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream - the same familiar scent (I used the original formula) and a thicker consistency. I liked putting this cream before going to sleep. A new formula is now available.

3. Belli Beauty Elasticity Belly Oil - I enjoyed the light lavender scent of this product but since it is an oil, it takes longer to absorb so you have to wait before getting dressed. 

4. Mustela Stretch Marks Prevention - I am not a fan of this one. The cream would flake off my skin (as if it only stayed on the surface and never got absorbed). I also didn't enjoy the fragrance. 

5. Bio Oil - excellent product with promising results but after reading that it contains Vitamin A, I avoided it during pregnancy. Save it for after delivery! It is an oil so it takes some time for the skin to absorb it. Don't put it on when you are rushing out the door. 

6. Earth Mama Belly Butter - this one was one of my favorites. Very light and pleasant to apply, absorbed quickly and had a very mild fragrance. My skin felt moisturized without any residue. 

7. Bella B Tummy Honey Butter - I didn't enjoy the grainy, thick consistency of this product. It also made my belly itch so I stopped using this butter. 

Three pregnancies later and not a single stretch mark. I don't know if it was due to the creams, genetics or a combination of both but I know that the creams helped keep my skin moisturized. Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion and Cream are probably the least expensive on the market right now and having used them throughout my three pregnancies, it is safe to assume that they are somewhat helpful. If I were to do it again, I would use Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Cream, Belli Beauty Elasticity Oil and Earth Mama Belly Butter. These three were my favorite.

Stay consistent and apply the creams morning and night. Squeeze in an extra application in between if you can.

A high waisted skater skirt can hide your growing belly at the beginning of pregnancy (if you want to keep that secret a little longer). A flared tunic goes perfectly with leggings. An empire silhouette dress perfectly hugs your growing belly. A loose fitting dress in your closet can now serve as a tunic. Looking for something for a special occasion but don't want to be limited to maternity stores? Look for dresses and styles with a stretch. Many dresses can be used during pregnancy as long as the material is stretchy. Darker shades tend to be more slimming. Avoid clothing with horizontal stripes as they give a wider illusion.

• slippers to walk around - don't need to spend a fortune on these. I recommend tossing those after the hospital.

• nipple cream - I've used lanolin Find It Here
• disposable padded underwear if you don't want to wear the mesh ones they provide at the hospital Find It Here
• nursing pillow ("My Brest Friend" pillow is truly your best friend at the hospital and at home and is much more superior to the poppy pillow that offers no support). I found the deluxe version to be more comfortable than the original. (Find It Here)
• eye mask - it is not easy to get some shut eye with the hospital's bright lights. Find It Here
• belly wrap - it's never too early to start working on getting your flat tummy back. I've used Belly Bandit BFF with excellent results.

When a pregnancy test seems like a lifetime away and is just too long to wait for, here are some early pregnancy signs from my personal experience that may help you figure out if you are expecting:

1. Lower back pain - A lower back pain was probably one of the first signs to ever show itself in all of my pregnancies. It felt like a more intense version of menstrual cramps. All the other symptoms listed below seemed to follow. 

2. Sore breasts - they were so sore that it hurt to even put/take off a bra.

3. Heightened sense of smell - suddenly some things smelled awful even when they didn't bother me in the past.

4. Change in body temperature - I was freezing all the time. It felt as if I was coming down with a cold.

5. Headache - not your normal type of headache but a full blown migraine.

When you are ready to take a pregnancy test, there are some great digital ones but the HCG tests may show it earlier:

I recently traveled to the Eastern Caribbean Islands via Disney Fantasy which is one of Disney Cruise Line's newer ships. Many people have asked me the following questions:

1. How does it compare to Disney World?

2. Don't you get bored on the ship?

3. What do you do if it rains?

4. How is entertainment? What?? There is no casino? Is there anything to do for adults?

5. Is it really worth it?

 Honestly, I had asked myself those very same questions prior to our trip. I will try to address them all below: 

1. Disney World and Disney Cruise are two completely different experiences. You must try each at least once in your lifetime. Disney World is a much more active, hectic type of vacation as it forces you to plan everything ahead of time and the vacation itself is running from ride to ride, restaurant to restaurant, which can be exhausting for both parents and children. 

Disney Cruise, on the other hand, has almost no extra planning involved. All you have to do is book your stateroom and flight and can add on activities to your trip after. Disney Cruise is a very relaxing vacation. Everything you need is there on the ship. Disney does such an amazing job catering to kids that it makes our (parents') life so much easier.

2. There is so much to do on the ship at all times that you forget that you're on the ship. There is truly something for everyone there. Movies, shows, restaurants, games, arcades, mini golf, basketball, fitness center, spa, adult and kid pools, water slides, just to name a few. They constantly have different activities and contests that you can participate in. The kids' club is amazing with themed rooms and activities. My kids, who always refuse to stay in any kids' club, loved it so much that they refused to leave. 

3. It actually rained the first day of the trip and was really cold the second day but we didn't feel like we were missing out. We had the time to explore the ship, participate in activities and the kids still enjoyed the heated pool and movies by the pool.

4.  The entertainment was unbelievable. We actually looked forward to watching a show every night. They did a great  job entertaining children but did not forget about the adults. Every night was something new and exciting. Disney's Believe, Disney's Wishes and Disney's Aladdin are some of the broadway quality shows we enjoyed. Pirate night along with fireworks was a lot of fun as well. We also had the pleasure of meeting Ricky Kalmon (celebrity hypnotist and motivational speaker). His shows were incredible!

5. I can go on and on about what we loved about our Disney Cruise but the truth is that you will never understand it until you experience it for yourself! It was truly a magical vacation

and we would go back in a heartbeat!

brightest and biggest in nearly 70 years! It is called a

Supermoon due to the fact that it turns full at the same time it

hits the perigee which is the point on the orbit closest to Earth. 

Although it was at it's fullest point close to the morning hours

of November 14 (right before sunrise), the cloudy morning

didn't give such a clear picture so I am glad that I had captured

it during the night of November 13. 

The last time the moon was this close to Earth was in 1948.

Next time it won't be until November 24, 2034!

I am so glad that I got to capture this beautiful event and truly

see the beauty of the full moon up close! You can see the

transition of the supermoon through the two pictures taken at

9:52 PM and then again at 11:54 PM.

You will need:

6in Styrofoam Ball - the bigger it is, the heavier it will be and little kids may not be able to hold it (as happened in my case) so you may want to explore other size options.

3/8 in Wooden Dowel

Gum Balls or Carton of Double Bubble Assorted Gum Balls

Hot Glue Gun

Ribbon - to tie a bow when you are done

Step 1: Using the wooden dowel, make a hole in the bottom center of the styrofoam ball (this is where they will be glued so make sure it's deep enough to support the ball). 

Step 2: Using the hot glue gun, put some glue inside the hole you just made and glue the dowel. Hold it in place for a few minutes to make sure it bonds well.

Step 3: Take the Gum Balls and glue them to the styrofoam ball one by one. Try alternating colors to make it colorful. It is a little time consuming but the result is beautiful and smells delicious! 

Note: As you glue more and more gum balls, it will become heavy so it's easier to put it on the table dowel side up.

Step 4: When you are done gluing all the gum balls, cut a piece of ribbon and tie it around the wooden dowel. 

TA DA! Congratulations you just made a gigantic lollipop!

*The little birthday lady couldn't hold the photography prop as it was a bit too heavy for her so if your session's child cannot do so, you can have the parents help support the prop and then edit them out.
